IDEC2019 Kiev Opening/ 大会の始まり

IDEC2019 has started in Kiev. This year we have two parts. One is in Kiev and another is in Vinnytsia. More than 700 people participated here in Kiev. Liko School is the venue here. Three ladies from Kiev organizing team made speeches. A representative from Nepal also informed the next IDEC & APDEC will be from 15th till 19th or 20th October 2020.
IDEC2019のキエフパートが始まりました。この大会は後半はヴィニッツアと2か所での開催です。キエフでは700人を超える参加者が集まりました。実行委員会から3人の女性がスピーチをして始まりました。次大会は10月15日から19日あるいは20日にネパールで開かれるということも紹介されました。

APDEC2019オーストラリア大会③ Visit to Currunbena/ カランベーナ訪問

The second day, 16th is the day of Curranbena. The whole conference moved to Curranbena and celebrated its 50th anniversary. Students, ex-students and staff member told about the history and uniqueness of Curranbena, "Active listening" and "I statement" are the key phrases at Currumbena School. Mutual respect is the basis of Currambena education. It was very fruitful time with Currumbena people.

2日目・16日はカランベーナスクールの日です。大会全体がバスでカランベーナスクールに移動しました。今年はカランベーナスクールの50周年にあたり、その記念の日でもあります。子ども、OBOG、スタッフが次々と歴史、カランベーナスクールの特徴などを話してくれました。カランベーナスクールのキャンパスはとても緑が豊かで親しみやすい場所です。自分の意見をきちんと話す、積極的に話に耳を傾けるということがカランベーナスクールの基盤になっているということでした。

APDEC2019オーストラリア大会② 大会の開会

Firstly we had a speech about the aboliginal tradition. Actually we had a "condensed" time. The first lecture is about Summerhill by Henry. We had a session of graduates of Curranbena, interesting lectures and questions and answers session till 21:30. The themes of the lectures are the reformation of public high school to more democratic high school, Korean democratic education and the tragedy of the ferry, and the e
ducation of Australia and Finland. We have teenager members and they said it was very interesting.

大会のはじめに先住民アボリジニの伝統にのっとった歓迎のあいさつがありました。初日から中身の濃い日程でした。最初の講演はサマーヒルスクールのヘンリー・レッドヘッド氏のサマーヒルスクールの100年についてでした。カランベーナスクールの子どもと卒業生によるパネルディスカッションでは小学校までのカランベーナスクールの進路についても多く話されました。メルボルンの人気が無くなった公立高校を子ども中心の活動に変えた実践例もその高校の校長から話され、注目を集めました。録画でフィンランドどオーストラリアで高官を務めた人物のインタビューも上映されました。夜9時半まで密度の濃い時間を過ごしました。

APDEC2019オーストラリア大会① 大会の始まり

15th of July is the first day of APDEC2019. APDEC stands for Aisa Pacific Democratic Education Conference/ Community. This APDEC is in Sydney. Currumbena School is the local democratic school. We cerebrate thier fifty year cerebration tomorrow during the conference. Approximately 300 people are from countries and

 societies of Asia and Pacific regeon.This is the fourth APDEC but this conference is a part of IDEC(International Democratic Education Conference) movement.This conference is important opportunity of reunion of democratic education people in this regeon.

2019年7月15日は第4回APDECの初日です。APDECはアジア・太平洋フリースクール大会とも訳され、第2回大会を2017年に東京で開催したものです。今回はオーストラリア最大の都市シドニーでカランベーナスクールが主催して開かれました。300人ほどの参加者が見込まれています。初めて参加する人にとってもとても刺激的な大会です。また、継続して参加する人にとってもエネルギーを充填する大切な機会になっています。

Clonlara 50th Anniversary: Ceremony in city center ②/ クロンラ50周年: レストランでのお祝い③

The second day of the 50^th anniversary of Clonlara School is a more sophisticated one at the at a bit formal restaurant in the city center of Ann Arbor. President Obama when we was President visited this because this restaurant takes care of the workers quite well.

First, Chandra, the present director of Clonlara who is a daughter of Pat made a speech. Pat Montgomery, the founder of Clonlara is the central figure. Pat made her speech. Then the graduate, ex staff and some people made speeches including me. Then Patrick Farenga from Holt GWS LLC made the keynote speech. Pat spoke the contribution of Pat Montgomery to US home education. Amazing music was played by a graduate violinist with his colleague.

二日目となった５０周年イベントはオバマ大統領が任期中に訪れたといういささか格式の高いレストランを借り切って開かれました。現在の代表のニコルさん(Patさんの長女)のスピーチに始まり、卒業生、元スタッフなど僕も含めスピーチをしました。そしてジョンホルトの流れをくむ団体の責任者と務めるファレンガさんが基調講演でパットさんのホームエデュケーションへの貢献を中心に話しました。その後、卒業生でバイオリニストが同僚と一緒にクラシックからスコットランド民謡まで素晴らしい演奏を披露してくれました。

Clonlara 50th Anniversary: Open Campus Cerebration ②/ クロンラ50周年: キャンパスでのお祝い②

Clonlara people cerebrated 50^th anniversary of the school. It started 13:00. Many graduates, parents, former staff members, friends came together. Pat Montgomery, the founder published her book about the experience of Clonlara for this day. It is titled “The School That’s Inside You”. This words are from A.S.Neil of Summerhill school. When Pat decided to start Clonlara, she visited Neil at Summerhill. Neil told Pat these words. Because Clonlara school is a leader of American democratic schools, it’s good to read to know history of child centered education from the perspective of not only campus schools but also home education.

Some of the participants I met today are very special people. Some graduates participated the exchange trip to Japan and US in 1994. It took a month altogether. First, Clonrala people visited Japan and traveled Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, etc. Then Tokyo Shure people visited US and traveled Ann Arbor, NY, Washington and NCACS conference. Konomi-san had been a staff member at Clonlara for many years who supported Japanese home educators for years.

Pat signed many of her newly printed copies for hours and we enjoyed the cake cut and planting a tree, etc. The people had a great time of reunification.

　今日はクロンララスクールのキャンパスでの50周年のお祝いでした。各地から卒業生、家族、元スタッフ、協力者たちが集まりました。子ども達のために、空気で膨らました大きな遊び場を始め、芝生に置かれた巨大なチェス、チェックメート、シャボン玉吹き、ハーブ、太鼓のワークショップ、ポップコーンの屋台などは子どもとその親でにぎわいました。30周年で建てられた建物の中では、ファンドレイジングのためのオークション、写真による歴史の展示、ドーナツやピザの販売コーナー、パットさんの新刊本のサイン会、などを自由に訪れることができるようになっていました。

　いくつかのセレモニーもあり、市議会議員の挨拶、パットさんの挨拶、ケーキカット、記念植樹などがありました。集まった人たちの中には僕にとっても懐かしい人々との再会もありました。1994年にクロンララとシューレが相互に訪問し合った1か月の旅行に参加したクロンララの卒業生たちや、長らくホームエデュケーションで日本の子ども達を支えられた篠原このみさんのような人たちです。大切な場所で懐かしい人々に出会う暖かい時間でした。

The 50th Anniversary of Clonlara School ①/ クロンララスクールの50周年①

     Clonlara School is an American free democratic school. Clonlara School is a special free democratic school for Japanese free democratic school people. In 1980’s, Japanese schools had many problems such as school violence, bullying, etc. Many Japanese people,  not only teachers but also college students, parents, citizens looked for “solution” for such Japanese education. Quite a few people got interested in “free school”. Those days, “free school” was new ideas from oversea society. Summerhill School in UK and Clonlara School in US was introduced to such Japanese people, through news papers and books. Here and there throughout Japan, such citizens organized study groups about “free school”. They read books and discussed a lot about such free schools. Many people got interested in Clonlara School. So, Mat Montgomery, the founder of Clonlara School was invited to Japan and visited many parts of Japan to have speeches.
     Clonlara School fascinated Japanese people because of reasons. The way of education at Clonlara School itself was fascinating. Children enjoyed their freedom. Clonlara also started home based education. Clonlara was one of the leaders to enable home based education legally in US. Clonlara School also organized the nationwide network of free democratic schools in US and some other countries with some friend schools. So, Japanese people learned a lot from Clonlara School at that time.

　クロンララスクールはアメリカのフリースクールです。フリースクールというと、今は国語辞典にも載っていて、海外からやってきたもの、というイメージはずいぶん薄れてきたように思います。しかし、30年くらい前はまだフリースクールは日本でそれほど知られていませんでした。1980年代の日本社会は、校内暴力、いじめという社会課題もあり教育に注目が集まっていました。そこで、欧米にあるフリースクールに希望をもって注目した人が大勢いました。日本ではあまり知られていなかったフリースクールを知りたいと思う時に、日本の人たちが関心を持って見たのがイギリスのサマーヒルスクールとアメリカのクロンララスクールでした。この時、クロンララスクールは関心を持つ日本の人たちにとってきらきらと輝く希望の存在だったのです。大沼安史さんが北海道新聞で世界のフリースクールを紹介しました。その時にクロンララスクールは大いに注目を集めました。関心を持つ人たちが各地で立ち上げていたフリースクール研究会でもクロンララは高い関心を持たれ、代表のパット・モンゴメリーさんは日本で講演旅行をするようになったのです。パットさんの著書を含めクロンララに関する本も3冊出版されました。
　そのクロンララスクールはアメリカの北東、五大湖の近くにあるミシガン州にあります。かつてアメリカ、世界の自動車首都と言われた3大メーカー(フォード、GM、クライスラー)の拠点を擁したデトロイトの近くにアナーバーというミシガン大学の大学街があります。クロンララスクールはそこで50年前に生まれました。1960年代のアメリカはフリースクール運動がとても盛んな時代で、各地で従来の教師が教室で、教師が決めたことを子どもに教え込ませるという教育の在り方に疑問を持った人々が自分たちで小さな学校を始めていました。クロンララスクールもその一つです。サドベリーバレースクールなどもこの時期に生まれています。しかし、この時期に生まれたフリースクールの多くは今日まで続いていません。そういう意味でもクロンララは特別と言えますが、それだけでクロンララスクールが特別なのではありません。クロンララスクールは子ども中心のホームエデュケーションの旗手としてアメリカで子ども中心のホームエデュケーションを広げ、各地の州法を変えていく基盤を作った一つでもあります。さらに、アメリカのフリースクールの全国ネットワークである全米フリースクール連合をその中心として立ち上げ、フリースクール運動を展開してきたまさに真ん中に位置してきたフリースクールなのです。
　しばらく前にパットさんからメールがあり、クロンララスクールが50周年を迎え、お祝いをするので出席して欲しいというお知らせを受け、少し後で、郵便でインビテーションが届きました。今回の渡米はクロンララスクールの50周年のためだけなのでアメリカにいるのはほぼ2日というトンボ返りの旅です。
